The original settlers of the Flathead Valley in NW Montana were the North American Indians. Tribes include the Salish, Kootenai and Pend d’ Oreille. Non-native settlement of the Flathead Valley did not occur on a significant scale until the 1880’s. In 1891, the Great Northern Railroad was extended from the East to Kalispell, creating a mass transportation route over the continental divide. The Flathead Valley became a hub for the timber industry. Flathead County was officially established in 1894. The early decades of the 20th Century brought continuing population growth as lumber mills, farming and commerce fueled local economic development.
Beginning in the early 1950’s, other economic generators were established throughout the county, including tourism in Glacier National Park and a ski resort named Big Mountain. As growth continued at an unprecedented rate, the Flathead Valley now boasts the newly renovated Flathead Valley Community College, the new Glacier High School, Kalispell Regional Medical Center, Kalispell Center Mall, the new Hutton Ranch and the upcoming Glacier Town Center.
Situated 2,959 feet above sea level on the west slope of the Rocky Mountains, Kalispell and the surrounding Flathead Valley enjoy a relatively mild and pleasant climate year round. The area has four distinct seasons which provide multiple opportunities to enjoy the area.
